Surveillance programs should be in place to address the nature of these infections more closely and to address treatment alternatives. Unfortunately, the mortality rate for this type of infection is very high, given the severe nature of the bacteria and its rapid influence on organs and systems [ 1314 ]. In addition, antibiotics with a broad spectrum of gram-negative activity were initiated in about a quarter of cases, while multiple antibiotics were started in about one-third of cases. Despite this, MRSA was one of the most common pathogens identified in both groups. We previously reported two retrospective cohorts of patients requiring hospitalization for acute bacterial skin infections in 7 Colorado hospitals 4 academic and 3 community facilities between January 1, and May 31, For patients with osteomyelitis, polymicrobial infections were a contributing factor, along with Gram-negative organisms and anaerobic infections in patients [ 10 ].
Our findings also highlight that given cutaneous abscesses in hospitalized patients are frequently polymicrobial and involve pathogens other than MRSA, particularly among injection drug users, future IDSA treatment guidelines should specifically address the appropriate spectrum of antimicrobial therapy in these cases.
